R.I.P Stephen Lawrence [13 September 1974 – 22 April 1993]
This is why I love Dean Atta. He’s a writer, poet, activist and friend. As I gather my own thoughts and Black Britain re-mourns the murder of Stephen Lawrence I thank Dean for this poem: “I am Nobody’s Nigger”. “Nigger” was one of the last words Stephen Lawrence heard before he was murdered by a racist gang in South London in 1993. We cannot find pride, dignity, love or hope in a word that was used by people who hated us to pathologise us. We were brothers and sisters before we were “niggers”.
